Vintage Everyday

One of the things I have noticed from following vintage blogs and people on social media is that they are able to dress mid century all the time. Unfortunately due to my job I cannot do this. I have to wear a uniform for work and as much as it takes the faff out of getting ready in the mornings, I do so miss my individuality. So I try to keep my style by putting my hair up in to a Gibson roll and wear subtle eyeliner and red lip stain. The good thing about a Gibson roll is that it looks professional and stays in place all day.
However what would I wear to the office if I had the choice?
I've had many daydreams of this. I long for loose swing trousers in navy and grey teamed with peter pan collared blouses and woollen twinsets.
Office wear works well with vintage and is a very smart look. But what about at home?
Well during the 1940s because of rationing, fabric and clothing was in short supply. So a make do and mend ethos was trust upon the public. As women started to work the land and in factories, utility wear became the norm. Hair was always tied up out of Health and safety and women soon discovered they could look feminine by adding a hair scarf, which was also functional. By the 1950s, with the men back from war taking the jobs again a woman’s role was of a housewife. Fabric was available again and so the trend for large voluminous skirts was popular.
It would be great to swish around the house in a petticoat layered circle skirt all day, but its not very practical. Even in the 50s, housewives wore a housecoat or a change of clothing whilst completing the chores. Then they would change again before dinner.
So when i'm at home I tend to wear blue jeans and blouses or a woolen cardigan. I put my hair in a high ponytail and my fringe into a suicide roll or pomp. Topped off with a scarf tried around, land girl style. In the summer it's capri's or pedal pushers and skirts minus the petticoat.
I think the thing I've quickly realised is a lot of the social media stars are either pin up models or professional bloggers. So they are expected to look a certain way or appear to look perfectly groomed 100% of the time.
So do I feel that I am letting the side down by not dressing up all the time?
I'm sure that some would say yes, but I say no!
I've taken vintage into my heart and into my life and I have fitted it to suit my lifestyle. I wear it as much as I possibly can. Maybe in the future I'll have the opportunity to wear what I want all day and when I do I'll have a lot more choice as my wardrobe will have expanded even more.
